Boat Rental Insurance Guide

Know what’s covered before you get on board.

Renting a boat or sharing your own starts with understanding the insurance. Before agreeing to a rental, check that the cover applies to the boat, the people on board and the planned use.

HejBoat connects boat owners and renters. Insurance is not included when you list a boat or contact an owner through HejBoat.

For boat owners

Check your cover before accepting a rental

Do not assume that insurance for personal boating also covers paid rentals. Describe your plans to your insurer and ask for written confirmation that the proposed rental is covered.

Be specific about how your boat will be used: rented without a skipper, operated with a skipper, or offered as accommodation while moored.

Ask your insurer:

  • Does my policy cover this type of paid rental?
  • Who is allowed to operate the boat, and what qualifications or experience are required?
  • Are damage to my boat and liability for injury or damage to others covered?
  • What limits apply to the sailing area, rental period and number of guests?
  • What exclusions and excess apply?
  • What should I do if there is an accident or a claim?

If the cover is unclear, resolve it before handing over the boat.

Make the terms clear

Give the renter the relevant insurance details before they commit. Explain the deposit, the excess and how damage will be handled under the rental agreement and insurance policy.

Record the boat’s condition and equipment together at handover and return. Take dated photographs and note any existing damage.

For renters

Ask what is covered

Before paying or signing, ask the owner to confirm that the insurance covers your rental, including the intended skipper, dates and sailing area.

Request the relevant policy details and check the excess, exclusions and procedure for reporting damage. A listing on HejBoat is not proof of insurance.

If you plan to sail the boat yourself, confirm that your qualifications and experience meet both local requirements and the insurer’s conditions.

Understand your possible costs

Ask how much deposit is required, when it will be returned and when deductions may be made.

A deposit and an insurance excess are different. Do not assume that the deposit is the most you could be asked to pay. Check your responsibilities in the rental agreement.

Ask your own insurer whether you need additional protection, such as skipper liability, deposit insurance or travel cover that includes your planned boating activities. Each policy has its own eligibility rules, limits and exclusions.

Staying on board or booking with a skipper?

Tell the owner exactly what you have planned.

A stay on a moored boat, a trip with a paid skipper and a rental where you operate the boat yourself may require different cover. Ask for confirmation that the insurance applies to your arrangement.

If something goes wrong

Put people’s safety first and contact local emergency services if needed.

Notify the owner promptly and follow the insurer’s reporting instructions. When safe, photograph any damage and keep relevant messages, receipts and details of those involved.

Check with the owner and insurer before arranging repairs, except where immediate action is needed for safety or to prevent further damage.

HejBoat’s role

HejBoat provides a platform for owners and renters to connect. We do not provide insurance or confirm that a particular rental is covered.

Owners and renters should confirm the applicable cover directly with the insurer before the rental begins.

This guide provides general information. Insurance terms and legal requirements vary by country, boat and activity. Your policy wording and rental agreement determine the cover and obligations that apply.
